Performers of Gospel Music and Their Techniques: Choirs 3
As previously mentioned, corroborative call-and-response is a known performance practice in gospel music (or Black music in general, for that matter). The corroborative call-and-response is as follows:
Lyrics |
---|
[Choir] "I'm so glad Jesus lifted me" [Choir] "I'm so glad Jesus lifted me" [Choir] "I'm So Glad Jesus Lifted Me" / "Singing glory hallelujah, Jesus lifted me." [Soloist] "Satan had me bound" [Choir] "Jesus lifted me." [Choir] "Satan had me bound" / "Jesus lifted me." [Choir] "Satan had me bound" / "Jesus lifted me." [Soloist] "Satan had me bound" [Choir] "Jesus lifted me" / "Singing glory hallelujah, Jesus lifted me." |
At the close of each "Echoes of Eden" radio broadcast, the choir sings "God Be With You." Sung in the same corroborative call-and-response manner, but in a slower tempo, the choir lyrically extends their hopes in seeing congregants again, and until then...God Be with You.:

God Be With You by St Paul Church Choir of Los Angeles 1947 [ 00:00-00:00 ]
Victory Baptist Church was another church in Los Angeles that also had an enormous influence on gospel music development. Due mainly to their radio program Voice of Victory in 1949 and their Victory Easter Telecast in 1953 on KTTV, Channel 11, Victory Baptist Church was one of the most famous churches in Greater Los Angeles. As seen on their program dated December 4, 1949, music complimented the church's service.
Achieving prominence and popularity over the years has allowed them to develop several music ensembles such as the Victory Trio (a woman trio), the Voices of Victory, and the A. A. Peters Chorale (Dje Dje 1989, 55).
Other choirs who were performing gospel music during the Golden Age of Gospel include:
- Albert Goodson Singers of Zion, Los Angeles
- J. Wesley Jones Choir, Chicago
- Old Zion Baptist Church, New Orleans
- Sky Pilot Choir, Los Angeles
- Southland Gospel Chanters, New Orleans
- St. Mark's Fourth Baptist church choir, New Orleans
Precious Lord
Through the storm, through the night
Lead me on to the light
Take my hand precious Lord, lead me home
It's a Highway to Heaven
It's a highway to heaven
None can walk up there
But the pure in heart
It's a highway to heaven
Walking up the king's highway
